A coworker lent me the Temperance Brennan (Bones) books she had, so i can begin relatively from the beginning. This is #4 and no, i didn't read the first three, but there's no need. I don't watch the show but i've heard the books and show are pretty different. I love reading about the science/autopsy part, but for over 3/4 of the book, that's all that kept me reading. The characters were very dry. I don't really like Tempe. The thing is, i don't dislike her either. She's bland. Everyone is skimming on top of what people would be. At the very end, things heat up. By the last chapter or so, i raced home on xmas eve eve to finish the book before i did my grocery shopping. the ending was super weird. the whole book is about Tempe, who gets called in to help at a major plane crash disaster, processing body parts and helping to discern who's who. A sad but important task. Suddenly, she's taken off the project and accused of lots of unprofessional things which could ruin her career. And then the story takes a major twist i won't give away here. This is also the book where Boyd the dog is introduced. He was my favorite character! Overall, a good book, but if you get grossed out easily or are not interested in forensic anthropology, autopsies, science, etc, then skip it (as the 2nd book i've read in this series, if you're not interested in any of that, skip the entire series.)

This was hands down my favorite of the first 4 books of this series. Kathy Reichs does so much research when she writes a story and I LOVE learning the ins and outs of the morbid world of forensics and all things post-mortem. Also didn’t realize how fitting this was as a spooky October read! I may return to this next October to get into the spirit of the fatal and the macabre.

Gotta be honest I was very worried at the end of the book when I thought Boyd wasn’t gonna make it. Other than that it was a good story, great mystery and always enjoyable read from Reichs.

This book went in a direction I wasn't anticipating which was a nice surprise.

The 4th book was much better paced than the 3rd book.

This is an earlier Temperance Brennan story, so I've been reading them out of order. The last one I read made Brennan out to be a MPD, sometimes smart, sometimes dumb. In this story her personality is more consistent throughout the story, as well as more consistent with the character's "billing" -- what you expect from an intelligent person in a murder-mystery. There wasn't the rehashing of the story, either, but because there were so many names, sufficient reminders were given to help job my memory.

If you watch the show Bones: this book is probably the inspiration for the Gormagon storyline, though only the secret cannibal society is similar -- and it's not Brennan's assistant who is guilty! :)

Andrew Ryan is barely a character in this book, which is fine with me. My favourite character is Lucy Crow, the local sheriff. Now there's a strong, intelligent woman in a typically-male position but does not reek of stereotype, which would have been easy to do here.

Sort of [b:Nancy Drew|32979|The Secret of the Old Clock (Nancy Drew #1)|Carolyn Keene|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1168408290s/32979.jpg|151480]ish in its plotline, but, having read those as a kid, I'm not fully turned off by it. A good book to read on a "dark and stormy night" or afternoon.

I feel like this was better than Deadly Decisions due to the storyline being more interesting. But there was a point in this book where she was trying to get evidence of what was in that house and I felt that bit trailed on for far too long. Also I thought I would liked some of the main characters after reading the first four books but I haven't except for Pete's dog, Boyd who was introduced in this book.
Basically, this book was about an air crash in a woodland area that turned into something more sinister due to a house in those woods and this is what kept me reading on as I wanted to know why the air crash happened and to know what the mystery of the house and the spate of disappearances around that woodland area was.
This book has its faults at times but I enjoyed the storyline.
