An overall interesting read but nothing revolutionary or life-changing. He includes fascinating psychological studies but other times gets too much into politics and religion in my opinion.

3 stars for me usually means, I'm not mad that I read it- it was still enjoyable, but it's not necessarily memorable or life changing in any way.
I did really appreciate the last chapter on the meaning of life and rethinking what that question means- and I of course liked seeing more deep meaning in the book 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'- loved that book, now I love it even more (he explains the ending to that book in a way that makes it so much deeper). It was an interesting concept but I basically got out of the book that happiness comes from good relationships and flow state in your work. Not a huge reveal, not as many deep quote from great leaders like I had been hoping for, lots of references to psychology studies that I already knew about. Maybe because this is like the 5th book in a row to mention the greek myth about Zeus splitting humans in half I just felt like a lot of it was old news. But there were some insights here and there- like that noise that is out of your control (ie living next to a freeway with horns randomly blaring) can have a negative impact on your happiness, scientifically proven.

Excellent. Walk through history of humanity through the lense of philosophy and what makes people happy

good

An engaging and illuminating read with lots of good ideas. The one flaw I would suggest is the political framing which today feels outdated and naive.

- read for psych 70
- honestly didn't finish it but got pretty far (maybe 2 chapters left?)
- all i can say is i liked 'influence' better, but i think the effect of flow on happiness was p interesting, never rly considered it
- thought it would be a lot more on self help and being happier which i needed but there was a surprising amt of content similar to influence but j written worse and a lot of psych 1/ap psych material like why did i read ab the cloth monkeys experiment again in 'the happiness hypothesis' bro

Much of it is very 4-star worthy. Some bits are less so, but overall it is a very good and non-standard treatment of happiness. Much of this book seems "right" to me, and the propositions are supported by data wherever possible.
