Kara Winthrop is a marine biologist suffering from a complex form of memory loss after a diving accident. Her husband Jacob, moves her to an island and is patient while she tries to recover her memories. Each day is a constant struggle as Jacob must remind her of their wedding, their past struggles with fertility and Kara’s questions as she begins to have memories into the past. She is beginning to remember bits and pieces; a rocky marriage and cryptic relationships. As Kara begins to uncover her past, the truth becomes a nightmare. Sometimes you cannot trust the people you love.

The Twilight Wife by A.J Banner was a nice, quick read for me. A thriller that follows a woman struggling with memory loss on an isolated island with her husband, I found that moments at the beginning of this one were reminiscent of The Vow; completely tender and strange for a novel marketed as a thriller. As the novel progresses, there are a few twists and turns to be found, and I ended up finishing this one in a single sitting. Although not as dark or twisty as I usually like my thrillers, the plot flowed together quite easily making it an easy read.

My favourite part of this novel was the atmosphere. The isolation of the island adds to the dreariness of the plot and as trouble ensues, a storm begins to brew on the island. I loved this use of pathetic fallacy and found myself completely absorbed into Kara’s struggle. Personally, I found the ending to be too “tidy” for a thriller and some of the twists were a little predictable; I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if it were more complex.

All this being said I did find it an enjoyable read. This one would be perfect for fans of S.J Watson’s Before I Go to Sleep or for someone who is looking for a lighter suspense novel.

Holy wow, this book was so good. I couldn't put it down! It had so many twists and turns that I wasn't expecting! There were several times where I had to look up and just say aloud "omg what?!" Before I kept reading.
This book is a total page turner, I couldn't read it fast enough. Wish I had skipped work to finish it earlier! 10/10 would absolutely recommend!

Woman loses memory after a diving accident and realizes her romantic relationships are not quite as they seem... Romantic mystery filled with twists until the very end!

Simple, quick read. If you've read Before I Go to Sleep, you know how all this works.

This was a fast paced thriller that I really enjoyed! I was caught up in the tragedy of Kyra's story as well as the protectiveness (that led to creepiness at times) of her husband Jacob. It always seemed like things weren't as they seemed, and the ending sure did reveal that to be true! My one complaint that brought this down from 4 to 3 stars was that Kyra wasn't always very proactive about her health and memory. There were times she was, but in the everyday things it seems like there were things she could do when she realized she didn't remember things day to day (make yourself notes?). Definitely worth the read though!!

2.5 stars. Subpar writing with a twist I guessed miles away, but still an interesting premise. I only picked this up because the main character was a marine biologist, but there wasn't as much marine biology as I was hoping for. Going to go reread [b:Into the Drowning Deep|34523174|Into the Drowning Deep (Rolling in the Deep, #1)|Mira Grant|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1489176444s/34523174.jpg|55657440] to satisfy my marine bio fiction needs.

I was so in to this book from like chapter 2! It was suspenseful, intriguing, with twists and turns and a great plot! The writing was beautiful and the descriptions used to describe the landscapes and settings were written with so much detail I felt I was there. Such an incredible book!

Billed as the next Gone Girl, The Twilight Wife follows along those same lines: a female-centered mystery/thriller involving a seemingly perfect marriage, an affair, and the added twist of an amnesiac main character.

The protagonist is a woman named Kyra Winthrop, a marine biologist living with her husband Jacob on an idyllic island off the coast of Seattle. Three months ago, she suffered a brain injury during a scuba dive and lost the memories of the last four years of her life. She woke up in the hospital unable to remember her husband, and went home with him after she completed rehab to put together the blurry bits of her recent life. Jacob Winthrop is seemingly perfect: calm, patient, gorgeous, talented, and devoted to Kyra. But once Kyra starts remembering bits and pieces of her life that she lost, something seems off to her.

The main narrative follows Kyra as she keeps remembering small moments of her life, from her marriage to Jacob, to her alleged affair with another man, and the complicated nature of her family history. It's an interesting book and definitely a quick, enjoyable read, but the next Gone Girl? Definitely not.

The pros of this book: It's a fast, fun, easy read that you won't want to put down. Kyra is a marine biologist, so the small scenes of her interacting with marine life is pretty interesting.

The cons of this book: There are many! The characters are cardboard, totally two-dimensional. The plot is super predictable, and reads more like the first draft of a screenplay in its very early stages, not enough character development, plot twists, or setting to really flesh it out. It seems like an exercise in writing a thriller that a college student could have written. It's being compared to Gone Girl, but any comparison to that novel is an insult to Gone Girl, which was a vivid, enthralling, psychological thriller with myriad poignant life truths aside from the action. The Twilight Wife is all spectacle, and it's not even that interesting to watch!

2/5

A quick read; suspenseful; a woman has a head injury from a diving accident + she loses short-term memory. Discovers her "husband" isn't who she thinks he is. Takes place in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest.
