This book really sucked me in from the beginning and I really didn't want to put it down. Something about the writing style was refreshing and made it very enjoyable. The plot was almost a romantic mystery, if there is such a thing. I couldn't wait to see who ended up with whom and how everyone turned out. Definitely some sad bits along the way with an equal dose of surprise and humor.

  • Katey is one of my favorite protagonists (quite possibly of all time). She was clever and someone to aspire to
  • More about class differences than diverse
  • Written about a world that I would want to be in

Super interesting historical fiction that read like watching a classic Bette Davis movie. You definitely have to fasten your seatbelts for this bumpy ride. Katey Kontent is a fascinating protagonist. All the period details about NyC in the late 30s were excellent.

I enjoyed this book so much. It is a love letter to New York City (in the 1930s, but also today), with some sharp insights into class, relationships, and youth.

This started out slow and I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but before I knew it I was totally hooked!

It’s reflective, glamorous and evocative of an era, it really does make you want to drink either a martini or some bathtub gin and listen to jazz (none of which I actually like!) 🍸

Loved it ❣️

Very readable and engaging, and well written with delicious turns of phrase but also I felt like there was something a little amiss a little off… too romantic? Too starry eyed about fanciness and poverty? Too obviously oblivious to world events? Mostly I loved the writing and the plot kept me engaged. I’ll have to think about it a bit longer and see how I feel…
