Being young, wild and free in 1930s New York, Katey meets and makes friends that impact who she will become in life. I loved being along for the ride and experiencing the events that shaped her life in 1937.
I always say that some people are not meant to be in your life forever, but are just passing through to show you something you needed to learn, and this book was EXACTLY that.
I also really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of locations, food, clothing, etc that made up so much of the glamor of NYC. I felt like I was there walking alongside these characters.
I truly enjoyed this story and will definitely be reading more from Amor Towles.

Easily one of my top ten favorite books of all time.
Chock full of sharp, witty dialogue that will make you laugh and break your heart; charming, snappy characters who are enviably strong and relatably vulnerable; and gorgeous prose that will make even the countriest of bumpkins consider buying a one-way ticket to NYC, this book was totally life affirming without ever being sentimental.

At the start, I wasn’t sure I would get into it and thought it might be too slow. But I ended up really enjoying it. Beautifully written, poignant with some lovely lines (my favorite: Right choices by definition are the means by which life crystallizes loss) and the stunning backdrop of New York in the late 30s… it was a good one!

Mixed feelings on this book. Was loving walking through her life and bringing her back to Tinker. Enjoyed the conflict between her and Tinker. Didn’t love the ending how he just disappeared and she ends up being fine with it
A lot of the characters were unlikeable but Katey looked past them. Eve, Anne, even Dicky. Didn’t love that, it felt really unrealistic.
All in all still enjoyed still captivated in true fashion. Will keep reading his books

I did not like this as much as A Gentleman in Moscow, but I did like it a lot. This is a book set in the latter part of both the Great Depression and the Jazz Age. It feels like it moves around the very edges of the world we know from Fitzgerald and Hemingway and Wharton. Yes those are very different styles, but I felt the influence of all here. Had I read this book first, I would have been so excited to see where this author with such great potential goes. I’m still pretty excited about him. Moscow was such a different book, but I loved them both and I think Amor Towles has joined my list of go-to authors. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.
I’m genuinely bereft that this book has finished. I thought I had 10% left but the appendix is quite long so the end shot up on me like a bat in the night. The protagonist Katey pulled up a chair and made herself comfortable in my mind throughout this book and I’m sad to see her go. She is a dry, self-assured and wise cracking woman and frankly I want a bit of her easy confidence. Towels’ character development of her was fantastic. And, the juxtaposition of New York’s glamour and grime at the end of the 1930s is articulate and tasteful without being performative. All in all j’adore.
