I wanted to love this more than I did, but the plotting was just all over the place.

Love the artwork and America is kick-ass, but I was a little confused most of the story. I feel like I needed to have read some of the Young Avengers to really understand everything.

It's pretty good, shame it was such a short run: https://blogendorff.com/2019/02/04/book-review-america-vol-1-the-life-and-times-of-america-chavez/

I like America Chavez as a character, but the story and backstory was all just too choppy. I may try the next volume in the future... perhaps it comes together more?

There wasn't much backstory, which should've been nice since I haven't seen any America in any other comics. But other than that it was a good story, can't wait to see more.

I loved America...as much as I could love a character I barely knew. But what the hell happened here. People don't talk like that. Not even teenagers. Also I feel like I still barely know her.

I'm Swedish-Chilean, and have always longed for that latina-representation - especially as a young girl who only wanted to look like her blonde Swedish mother, since said mother looked like the princesses I saw in movies. That’s why I’m so incredibly disappointed in this comic. It almost felt personal.

[b:America, Vol. 1: The Life and Times of America Chavez|34380219|America, Vol. 1 The Life and Times of America Chavez|Gabby Rivera|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1508101918l/34380219._SY75_.jpg|55468376] is about America Chavez, a powerful superhero who fights with her fists and doesn’t take shit from anyone. Unfortunately, that’s the most I got from this graphic novel. The plot was all over the place, and for someone like me who is not really invested in the Marvel universe, it was incredibly confusing. Not only that, the dialogue and characters often felt out of place - we were never able to really connect to any of them since we never got to know them properly.

As for the art, it was mostly superb. However, the last artist changed artist, and not only do I dislike when the art suddenly changes drastically, but this time it changed to the worse. That’s when I found myself completely giving up, skimming the pages until I finally reached the end.

There wasn’t even much latinx representation - the most representation we actually got was America saying fun one-liners in Spanish and talking about empanadas, which only made me hungry.

My disappointment with this was huge. It’s not the worst I’ve read, and it gets plus points for America’s abs and all the lesbians, but abs and lesbians can sadly only carry a story so far.

3.5 stars for sure. I am honestly torn. I want to pick up Volume 2... but the art work for the last 2 comics in this volume was horrible. Read my review here for the first issue. America #1 review.

Slight spoilers ahead! The story picks up for sure around issue 3. By then we are seeing more about America, where she is from, and how she came to be. I am not understanding why she is constantly deflecting when it comes to people, its like she's angry? But why is she so angry? I also don't get why she broke up with Lisa? She can open portals, thats the best power to have when you're in a long distance relationship. That made no sense. The story isn't that captivating, I feel like I am trying to understand America too much, and the plot slips away from me. Then in issue 5 the artwork changes, and to me that changes the entire tone of the comic. It went from vibrant and new to 1992 grit real quick.

I don't know if I will get volume 2.

Super fun and wonderful! It’s chalk full of queer joy and haters can suck it.
