I have to remember that all of the very obvious tropes in this book were relatively new when it was first written. It is an enjoyable fantasy novel.

Eddings once again adds another travelogue to the growing series. Another example of journey, encounter difficulty, reach place, politics, issue resolved and repeat. Eddings also seems to have a particular skill for making what should be the most dramatic parts of the stiry into the briefest and blandest. Thankfully some of the interesting encounters along the way made up for this and carried the story.

This is possibly my favourite of the first trilogy, it really marks the turning point for Garion and it has the feel of a good old fashioned DnD quest. Sneaking into the magicians tower to steal a magic item classic!
A lot if the story and character arcs really move forward in this one and of course we get our first real flight and then fight.
For me though it's the small things that make this book. Garion meeting his cousin, creating the flower and of course Ce'Nedra finally realising a lot about herself!
It all just works and of course the banter and smart talk continues.
Onto book 4

I think this is the book where Polgara bitches at Garion constantly. He's just a boy!
