I was really having a tough time deciding on a 3 or a 4. It’s a great start and introduction to the LOTR, and the way that he writes the scenes between Bilbo and Gollum/Bilbo and Smaug, they’re just so damn good. I think I would probably give this a 4 if I didn’t already know the context of what’s to come, which is just so much more fleshed out. This isn’t a full explanation. It was a pretty quick read, I thought that Thorin could maybe had some more development. Still is an amazing way to set up what follows, and I really liked the way that Tolkien tells the story as a tale.

I was really expecting to enjoy this book but it didn't happen.

1. Not a lot actually happens in this book and it feels like all the good stuff happens off page so what is actually the point?

2. The volume of "dangerous" situations really lowers the impact of all the danger.

3. More songs than Broadway

4. About seven of those dwarves were basically interchangeable and made no impact whatsoever

I'm really hoping the trilogy will impress me more but I have vastly lowered my expectations going forward
