No one seemed to have a problem with the fact that I wasn’t strong or a fighter. They were just happy that I matched Rath so well.
In this world, there are barbarian clans that require female tributes to carry on their bloodline since barbarians are only born as males. When Finn's father finds out that he's gay, he sacrifices Finn as the first male tribute to the clans. He winds up coming to Rath's clan, and Rath's clan leader immediately lets him know that he may have found a potential bondmate for him. We understand from the beginning that everyone in the clan is fully accepting of Rath's sexuality and desire for a male bondmate.
“One of the towns offered a male. I considered sending him back, but you’ve been alone too long. Go see if he interests you before I decide.” I wasn’t the only male in our clan that had no interest in females. There were others. But most were open about their conquests and not interested in settling down. I had no interest in trysts. I wanted a bondmate, someone to take care of. But since the towns who were beholden to us only ever sent females, I thought that was impossible.
While Finn is understandably terrified of the barbarians, he quickly finds out that all of the rumors of feral barbarians is a lie and that Rath is the most gentle man he's ever known. Rath has only ever wanted someone to take care of, and he is so kind and loving and gentle to Finn. Oh man, the intimacy they share before they even become bondmates is so special.
Finn constantly worries (and cries a LOT about it) that he's not masculine enough for Rath or that the clan will kick him out if he doesn't pull his weight, but everyone reassures him that he is perfect the way that he is. And that he's perfect for Rath. Even though he is a whiny little human. While it's a short book, Rath and Finn go through a lot while Finn learns the clans language, discovers the wild animals in the forest, and slowly learns to trust Rath and the other clanspeople. It's a beautiful story of found family, and I wish everyone could experience the love that Finn got from not only Rath but also everyone in the clan.
Big tears filled his eyes, and he closed them when I leaned my forehead against his. I knew this was not about me, but the way he was raised. It was hard for him to see himself as worthwhile after years of being on his own. I would spend my life showing him he deserved to be cared for until he finally believed me.
