i really enjoyed this book! the stories gawande told had such vivid imagery, all connecting w the theme that medicine is filled with uncertainty for both physicians and patients, and it’s oftentimes simple intuition and trust that guide difficult decision-making. each story brought a new perspective on this theme and i enjoyed reading all of them. gawande’s personal takeaways, along with interviews and relevant research, were very thought-provoking and introduced new ideas i’ve never thought before. reading this book brought me a deeper appreciation for the complexities of medicine and the innate humanistic nature of this field. what makes the career of a physician so distinct from others is how it directly involves the lives of others, demanding a powerful sense of morality and compassion. i would recommend this book for anyone interested in pursuing healthcare!! a great read

Well-written and well-researched. Ultimately, though, the thesis was not new to me (doctors are not infallible -- who knew??). An easy read with interesting anecdotes, but not much new information.

Little outdated but interesting nonetheless.

It is a commentary and “memoir” of a surgeon and his field - the rights and wrongs; fatalities and miracles; mishaps and mistakes of the health profession. But with all of this eye-opening information, it was a slow read and I gave up. The overall message was laden with “to err is human” feelings and it bogged down the narrative.

I found this book fascinating! The surgeon author gives an interesting insiders perspective with thoughtful and often frank writing regarding the limitations of medicine.

Really made me stop and think about what exactly my doctor should be expected to do. I think anyone who is sick or will ever be sick or in need of medical attention ought to read this one.

Read this during school training to be a paramedic. Granted Surgery and paramedicine not exactly the same thing, but had great stories of the learning curve. Giving one's self the opportunity to learn by making mistakes learning and growing from them. Very much enjoyed learning from his learning experiences.
