This was a very heavy book. I read a lot of stories about trauma that don't really bother me on an emotional level, but this one definitely got me more than others, so I would read with caution. It was well written and interesting, but I found myself wanting a bit more from it than what I got.

The writing is deliberately confusing and the plot is thin. The mystery is what exactly happened to the kids. When I realized I was skimming and actually looked up discussions to see if questions were ever answered (to find they weren’t or were deliberately vague), I accepted that the most interesting part of the book is the child abuse, so I gave up. This had been my second attempt to read it.

As messed up as it may be, kidnapping/cults is one of my favorite thriller tropes, so I was STOKED when this was a BOTM choice. Unfortunately, it really disappointed me.

😱The character descriptions and development was beautiful.
😱There was a good twist at the end that I did not see coming.
😱I really liked the relationship between Lex and Evie.
😱I appreciated how we got glimpses of the past and the present.
😱The mom FASCINATED me.

😱I wanted a better picture of the house and the struggles these people endured. I felt like it was super surface level and didn't live up to the true "House of Horrors" name.
😱I needed more about what happened with Ethan and Noah. Ethan freaked me out.
😱I wanted more about their lives after escaping.
😱The jumping of timelines was confusing at times.
😱Overall, I just wanted more.
