Wonderful art, fun characters, interesting story, and not just boobs all over the place. Barb is smart, strong, and fierce.

I loved this comic. It's about a young woman named Barbara Gordon who just moved in with a friend from college. She is also Batgirl, and has to deal with people who impersonate her and want to arrest her. Batgirl becomes famous online and becomes scared to reveal her true identity. She also falls in love with the police officer that wants to arrest Batgirl because he thinks vigilantes only endanger citizens more. Batgirl was also an experiment gone wrong, and this experiment leads to a computer virus that wants to destroy both Batgirls reputation and her relationships with friends. The computer virus situation also brings Barbara, Frankie and Dinah closer than they were before Barbara. Barbara also learns that her identity as Batgirl does not have to affect her relationship with friends because true friends accept you for who you are.

Since this is my first foray into DC comics I say the story line was pretty good. Though I have to say the world they live in parallels now in which everyone is so driven by social media.

I didn't love this volume, but it got better as it went, so I'll give Volume 2 a shot. I do like Frankie a lot, and it's always nice to see Dinah.

I'm afraid that there's one issue in this that means I just cannot go higher than 3 stars.

I know that they've apologised for the issue but the truth is it just should never have happened in the first place. It almost made me give up on Babs for life.

I'll say it once and then we won't go over it again: TRANSPHOBIA IS NOT OK. DON'T USE IT AS A SHITTY PLOT DEVICE AND MOST CERTAINLY DON'T USE IT IN SUCH A WAY AS TO SUGGEST TRANS IS CRIMINAL. IT'S A CLICHE AS HELL PLOT DEVICE AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE IT. If it happens again then Babs and I are through for good,

Now moving past that and onto the volume itself. Well it's certainly no Simone. I would kill for the gritty, edgy, beautiful drawn Batgirl of the Simone era to come back. The era where we had Alysia and emotions I could relate to and the artwork made me want to frame half the panels. However, here we are. Cartoony and childish and trying way to hard to be hip. And yet, I quite like it. It will never be as good as it was but while Babs is out there kicking ass I'll be likely to come back.

It was only when I was halfway through this that I remembered, "Oh yeah, this is the Batgirl plotline that was called out for being transphobic!" They'd altered the text in the collected edition but it still seems like, really weird? Like why not just... have another woman impersonate Batgirl? It's not like Dagger Type is an established character, right? Why not just have had a woman perfomance artist steal Batgirl's identity. Why.

Whatever.

Overall, I liked this okay. I do like it when books/comics use social media, and I thought the overall storyline was something relatively fresh. Also, although I'm sad to see Alysia from Gail Simone's run leave, I did appreciate the diversity of Batgirl's new squad. And of course, the much-vaunted new costume is pretty dope.
