Enthusiastically recommend this one!! It is so incredibly witty and the banter is top tier. It’s adventurous and mysterious and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Its ending is incredibly satisfying. Such a fun ride

Picked this up based on a random post that came up on my feed and entirely based on the title. Clever and steady paced. Not exactly suspenseful more methodical including the plot, enjoyed the idea of training people to become better killers/how to get away with murder.

I love that the narrator strongly commits to the bit here, and the world building is great. I was also impressed with the ethical standards at a school for murder—that made it easier to root for the killers in training. There were many interesting, cooky characters. Towards the end, though, I thought Doria’s approach relied on quite  transphobic tropes, and

it was upsetting that while they were all worried about bystanders, no one worried or cared about the queer man’s semen she took and planted at the crime scene. That was pretty fucked up.

Otherwise, though, it was very fun.

I will admit, when I first picked up this book I was slow in the uptake, especially when trying to navigate a lot of the 50’s slang. However, once you get into the meat and potatoes of the story, this is a really fun and well-executed (pun intended!) book. I really enjoy seeing the reflections on each of the students personal stories, and how their experiences are so similar and yet vastly different from one another. The world of McMasters is well thought out, and it feels as though every detail mentioned fulfilled its purpose, even if the payoff isn’t until much later in the book. Each character’s ending was not the most gratifying I will say, but I think it helps add to the realism of the story. I did enjoy it and I’ll definitely consider coming back for the sequel!
