4 stars. I prefer the film but this was still a fantastic and whimsical read. It was a lot of fun. I know the other two books aren’t as beloved as this one but I am very excited to continue on anyway. The writing is beautiful and I can see why Jones is one of Neil Gaiman’s favorite author’s. Her writing style is really impressive and imaginative. If you’re a fan of the film, I’d recommend this or if you’re wanting a good fun fantasy I think you’d really enjoy it.

Aside from the outdated language, I really enjoyed this novel. I felt a bit like a cheater for watching the film before reading, but it did help with comprehending what was happening in the book (imo).
