I was hooked by the first first paragraph
"Int he land on Ingary, where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of three. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes."
That sets the tone for the rest of the book, a delightful, witty, story that doesn't take itself to seriously and pokes fun at fairy tale tropes but filled with charming characters.

i think if you go into this book expecting it to be a carbon copy of Miyazaki’s movie, you’ll be disappointed. I made the mistake and therefore found it a little harder to get through as the plot varied quite a bit from the movie. however i think if I looked at it as it’s own work, and didn’t tie it to the movie, it’s a cute little story about adventure and magic and is very enjoyable for what it is as it’s own work.

I watched the book before this movie and enjoyed this one more. I liked the sibling and family dynamics of both Sophie and Howl.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and am really looking forward to continuing with the Howl Series. Like many others my first exposure to this story was by watching the Howls Moving Castle film not realising that it was originally based on Jones' book. I then of course had to read the novel and was surprised and delighted by how different it was from the film. For one thing there was more characters, for another their personalities and backstories were more fleshed out and overall stronger. So much happened in such a seemingly short story and there was so much foreshadowing cleverly introduced and interwind throughout the story. It took me a while to get used to Jones' writing style but as soon as I did I became very invested in the story and the characters. This book is so magical and the twists were fantastic, I would definitely recommend!
