The different cover artist for first printing of this third book in the Native Tongue trilogy should have been a clue. Earthsong diverges from the first two in both form and content and feels like a completely different book. My theory is Elgin had given up on Laadan becoming popular in use by the time she wrote Earthsong and shifted direction, hence the audiosynthesis plot line. Earthsong still has a lot to say about humanity, activism, and change and is a worthwhile read, but it requires a shift in mindset.

The first two in this series were amazing. This one seems to have been written by a different person with a different storyline. This is essentially the diary of someone losing their mind.

This is one of the few books I own because IT IS SO GOOD! Just re-read it during a bout of sickness and it was absolutely gripping. I am forever grateful o my Aunt Mary for giving it to me.

The most confusing installment of the series. The scale of the story got to being a bit too grand and I didn't connect with the characters the way I did in the first book.

It must be an exercise to turn your dystopia into a utopia. Especially when it’s clear you want to move the story relatively quickly & not do the world building of centuries.

This is a departure from the first two in terms of structure. This one is dealing with the twist at the end of the second book and it jumps around to different stories and further into the future. I enjoyed it because there were so many different perspectives on how people get affected when the world crumbles and a government coverup. My father did not like it because it wasn't as linear so be aware that it is different. There was also finally one Good Dude so that was fun
