This book surprised me- it is a true story and I thought it would be very financial and boring- it was a book club pick. I was pleasantly surprised that any financial info was easily understood and used to help understand what happened. Makes me look at both the US and Russian Gov't a bit more closely.

This isn't the usual type of nonfiction that interests me, but this story was amazing.  Very informative, but so heartbreaking.

This is between a 2 and a 3. For the first half of the book, I didn't get the point of the story. It only picked up halfway through. While I understand why Bill Browder included, maybe if I had known of the story beforehand I would have been more invested but this book took me awhile to get through.

All that aside, the story is fascinating and it's touching how he talks about Sergei and the fight with Russia.

I usually try to avoid recounting plots in my reviews but this (true!!!) story blew me away. The corruption, pettiness and barbarity conducted by the current Russian government and its factions is beyond fathomable.

Bill Browder amassed significant wealth from a cunning (ethically questionable) investment strategy capitalising upon the privatisation of the Russian economy and the sale of extremely undervalued assets following the collapse of the Soviets in the 1990’s. Upon discovering the scale of fraud and expropriation by oligarchs and govt officials Bill sets out to expose those culpable. The man clearly has a death wish and the story that unfolds reveals in exceptional detail the fullest extents the Russians will stretch to punish those who embarrass and expose the truth about their criminality.

Reading like a fictional spy thriller, this true story cuts to the heart of cynicism and corruption at the centre point of the Kremlin. It immerses you in the battle faced by Browder to deliver justice for Sergei Magnitsky who was tortured and brutalised by the Russian secret police for lifting the veil on the extent of their crimes.

But this is not only a breath-taking story of a singular experience. This book focuses on one instance of Russian kleptocracy and enormous amounts of capital, political influence and media attention. However, the raison d’etre for this account is a major push for human rights. Countries in every region of the world are being captured by authoritarian rulers as economic pressures bring significant disruption to global economies.
It is important in reading this book that one recognises the human rights abuses suffered by innocents, not just in Russia, but across all autocratic and tyrannical political regimes globally. Bill’s work has made a major leap forwards in delivering change however I fear we are unfortunately closer to the beginning than the end.

Very important read.

This book was very well written but even it it hadn’t been I think I still would have liked it simply because the story is beyond insane. I used to think of Russia as a mostly modern country with some weird 3rd-world left-overs. But after reading this I think it is just wearing some modern world disguise.
