Audiobook while walking. I had never read this and am on a focus to read/hear more in the classic category. Lovely little story of the orphan Anne and her adoption from the orphan asylum by the Cutberts, Matthew and Marilla. They are a brother and sister in their 50’s and 60’s needing help on the “farm”. The story takes place on St. Edward Island, Canada. Avonlea is an idyllic setting for the imaginative Anne. The story takes place from her adoption at 11 years until just over 16 years of age. Anne is dramatic and talkative and wants to please. She adapt well to the Cutberts and they quickly see the blessing in having Anne in their home. Wholesome and sweet but the story does not skip over the sadness of death. So happy to have listened. The narrator was ok.

3.5 stars. This was certainly a book. Anne managed to be such a smart yet infuriating protagonist that it almost made me understand why everyone was so awful to her. That being said, I think a smart young girl growing up despite her flaws and misdeeds and making a life for herself she enjoys is a very good message, especially for young women. A lot of the plot could be summed up as "let's all be misogynistic towards Anne, because she talks a lot and has dreams and ambition, which women should never have." The ending definitely makes up for what I considered to be a bit of a slog of the same repetitious plot point (where Anne does something out of interest or curiosity, fails, and makes people mad at her). Anne deserves so much better, and if I continue this series, I truly hope she gets the respect she deserves as a bright young woman.
