At first I found it rather difficult to get into this book. But as the time goes on you realise that it's written to reflect Grace's age at the time. Overall I really enjoyed it, even though it's at times horrifying and sad. No wonder it's been nominated for the Orange Fiction Award!

I didn't get on with this book and I'm not sure why. It's a powerful idea and well executed but for some reason I just didn't like grace, I feel a bit guilty about that.

3.5 stars. The story of Grace, who everyone thinks is mentally deficient but actually enjoys words and stories and is rather perceptive. And her boyfriend, Daniel, the armless story-teller who can fill in the blanks. And Grace's life at home and then at the mental institute. And growing up. And good times and bad. Besides that, there is some wonderful alliteration which I only picked up on when I read bits of the book out loud to my dogs. This is a little ironic seeing as Grace's clumsy tongue makes it difficult for her to speak more than one or two words, yet the words in her head make one's tongue leap quite gymnastically. I enjoyed this book. I'd find it difficult to tell who else would.

This was a hard book rate. I found much of it very shocking, but i think overall i liked it. It is a hard book to read because the narrator is Grace who has some mental disability. Her language is a little hard to follow until you get used to it. The subject matter also is difficult reading. There is a lot of abuse (physical, verbal, mental and sexual) in this book which is uncomfortable to read. Grace's words can also be a bit shocking. It has really opened my eyes to the preconceptions i had about disabled people.

This is quite a hard book to review as its a very difficult subject to write about. Although the story is harrowing its written in a mostly upbeat way, although there are really horrible parts to it. Its not the genre of book that I would usually read but I'm glad I have read this book.
