Got this on a whim at a used bookstore and was pretty worried about a book with a "Joycean use of language" would survive translation.
And honestly, look, I don't know Italian and can't rate the translation. And there were whole pages of just really weird stuff that I just let wash over me. I really enjoyed the book. It's kind of like a Big Lebowski as done by Fellini: there's a plot, nominally, but it's mostly just bizarre characters wandering into and out of the pages getting in fights or talking about who ripped them off or whatever. It does a good job at accomplishing Gadda's goal - that there's never any "one" reason why things happen - through sheer intensity and claustrophobia.
For a book about a gruesome murder, fascist police, and class abuse, it's a hoot! Just genuinely funny weirdness that I'll probably remember forever, even if I'll never remember the name of a single character. I don't think this is for everyone, but I dunno, I'm really glad I grabbed it randomly because I really enjoyed dipping my toes into this messed up world 30 pages at a time for a month or so.
