Eggers is 50% brilliant and 50% trash, often times in the same story. His writing style started to really annoy me even when it was good near the tail end of this collection.

All of the pomp, but none of the substance.

The deal: Dave Eggers writes great novels. This isn't one of them - it's all short stories, all the time.

Is it worth it?: These babies are super affecting in the best way. Strongly endorse.

Pairs well with: a small attention span, crying on the beach

A collection of brilliant short stories by Eggers, amusing, unexpected, exotic, some funny and most of them bittersweet. I especially enjoyed The Only Meaning of the Oil-Wet Water, which "showed" me what surfing is; Notes for a Story of Man Who Will Not Die Alone, a story in the making ; Up the Mountain Coming Down Slowly, on the real price of some exotic trips ; and After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned, from an unconventional point of view.

This book of short stories floored me. I wanted to talk about it with everyone, but unfortunately, nobody I know had read it. Something about Dave Eggers, it's almost like when I discovered Bukowski...

When it comes to books of short stories, I rate the book on my favorite short story. So - I remember really liking one of them in there, but I don't know that I've read them all. Again, gotta love Eggers' packaging.

I didn't expect to love this collection as much as I did, but...I did. One of the strongest collections I've read!

Dave is great. I loved all these stories, especially "Up the Mountain Coming Down Slowy" and "The Only Meaning of the Oil-wet Water".

Some of the short-short stories seemed more like notes or afterthoughts and less cohesive. But he can make a story work in any variety of circumstance, like in "Climbing to the Window, Pretending to Dance" and "After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned".
