I enjoyed hearing of Sydney in the 60’s & 70’s, the journey to find her old pen pals and the authors observations on how life has changed. Brooks definitely has a global perspective having lived all over.

I picked this book up because I enjoyed the novel I read by Brooks and I wanted to know more about her. By the title, I thought I was going to learn about her experiences as a Foreign Correspondent.
What I got was better, in my opinion. I learned about her childhood, her pen pals and how she got to where she is now.
I had a couple of pen pals as I grew up. I can't imagine finding them and if I did, the stories would not be this good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Geraldine Brooks can certainly write and her life experiences (so far) are fascinating.

Having grown up with a few pen pals of my own, this book was dear to me. I love the way Brooks tells her memoir. It is absolutely beautiful.

Absolutely excellent, was a bit slow at the beginning but once I was about a quarter the way in it really started picking up. Language use and writing style is among the best I've seen, I'm just glad the kindle has a dictionary because i struggled to come across one page where i knew all the words.

It was interesting, but it was only her second book. I enjoyed her later stuff more, ESPECIALLY [b:People of the Book|1379961|People of the Book|Geraldine Brooks|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348809332s/1379961.jpg|3020568], which is one of the best books I've read all year.
It was interesting reading about her growing up in Australia during the late 50's and early 60's, and I liked the way she wove in all her correspondence with her foreign pen pals.
I would recommend it, but not as strongly as I would her novels.

I loved this book. Probably as I am nearly the same age as the author, a lot of the late1950s 1960s to early 1970s childhood experiences resonated with me. Very readable, and so interesting to visit childhood penpals as adults.
