Gorgeous, moving, painful—all the best things. I loved the tentatively hopeful ambiguity of the ending.

This is kind of the opposite of her other book The Vegetarian; once I started it, I had to read the entire thing in one sitting. This was so slowly contemplative it let my mind wander a lot, and I’d have to put it down and come back to it later. There is a lot of description of snow slowly falling, and that’s about the pace the book takes. It definitely created an appropriate atmosphere for a ghost story of sorts. Sort of a horrifying time to be reminded how easily a government will just exterminate 200,000 people to clean up political dissent.
