An elusive dream intercut with the hidden dreams of the loved one you despise, for reasons you can't articulate. The oscillating weight of guilt, light as a snowflake and heavy as a snowbank. The sanctity of life in a budgie and a mass grave. Kang's poetry shoulders all of these extremities and presents extremely intimate vignettes that care far more about the emotions that metaphysically envelop Jeju under blizzard, than any traditional notions of plot. I particularly enjoyed the specificities of awkwardly waiting for a bus and the countless micro-decisions that spiral about whether your needs, a fellow passenger's needs, and the bus driver's needs will align.
I struggled to ground my mind in the historical passages, but I am sure if I pay closer attention on a reread I will be able to understand the context better. The emotional undercurrents of this work are really cutting, specific, and arcane in a way that encourages focus and introspection. It's wintry and biting here in Colorado so I was really able to get into the mood of the novel. I loved how somber and evocative the narration was, it is very similar in tone to the languid pallor of the final act of The Vegetarian. I look forward to exploring Kang's work in more detail. This is a stellar addition to her incredibly nuanced, thoughtful, quiet lexicography of humanity's violence as competing, ruthlessly voracious yet exactingly minute forces of nature.
