I’m not sure if i was too high when i read this because I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on. Am I too dumb for this book? I did get a little spooked near the end. I’m unfamiliar with the historical context so I may need to revisit this one in the future.

Attempting to discuss the impact of the harrowing events in South Korea on its people and the world is a tremendous undertaking and I am far from competent enough on the subject to rate the illusionary literary devices used by the author to convey the pain, grief, confusion, anger, melancholy, and heroic grit to go on while knowing what has happened to these tens of thousands of innocent people who were lost to their loved ones, neighbors, and friends. Every seemingly confusing plot line, the disconnectedness of the protagonist, the slow and then fast pacing contrasting from part to part can all be seen as purposeful to immersing the reader in the struggle that represents the horror of this story. It is a difficult read with parts that seem disjointed and nonsensical and I can’t help but think that’s the point. I’m grateful to the author for the work and felt the struggle to read it was the point. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Powerfully and beautifully written novel that honors friendship as well as the massacre that occurred on Jeju Island 1948-1949.
To quote writer Yung In Chae, "This is the power of Han Kang: With little more than paper and ink, she acts as a conduit for the memories of generations that suffered state violence, passing them on to generations that inherited these traumas but not necessarily the long-suppressed facts beneath them. She makes that pain legible, indelible, meaningful."

Audiobook narrated by Greta Jung.
