maybe a little too clever to be called perfect. a lot of the time fighting to understand everything that’s happening so that, in the plot’s sadder moments, readers might still have their guard up. still class tho and probably a masterpiece. big as well

I read this book in a swap with Megan, and I can see how it’s a big and sweeping novel that got lots of international attention for its focus on an imagined history of the prophet Mohammed. I’m not one for magical realism, though at times I did appreciate the thin and indistinguishable line between vision and reality. The conversational, disjointed flow of the plot made it difficult to follow. I also didn’t find the characters compelling except in a few rare moments where they sought reconciliation and feared their own power.
