This is a fun and quirky YA novel that mixes the humor of "Groundhog Day" with the chaos of teenage party movies. The story follows Emma, a 17-year-old stuck in a time loop during her senior trip, reliving the day she plans to lose her virginity over and over. The book captures the chaotic essence of teenage life with crass humor and multiple perspectives, though the abrupt ending left me wanting more closure. The fast-paced and relatable characters kept me engaged, but the repetitive nature and some offensive humor may not be for everyone. It's an entertaining, light read for those who enjoy a humorous take on teenage struggles.

This was an absolutely hilarious story. I was often grinning at the dialog and antics of the characters! I want to see it as a t.v. show - it's like a young adult soap opera.

Repeat After Me was a WILD ride that had me laughing and/or guffawing the whole time.

THOUGHTS 💭
🐙 To start - this book is LITERALLY stunning. The detailed edges and the colors have made this one of my favorite books on my bookshelf!
🐙 These characters are so funny and I really enjoyed seeing their different perspectives on things from the H2Blow invention to seemingly uncharacteristic outbursts to the perfect Single Ladies dance rendition; they had some of the funniest, realest thoughts.
🐙 What would you do if you relived the same day over and over again for 3 days? 500 days? 14,987 days? We watch Emma grow up in the same day relived over and over and over again.
🐙 This is a coming of age story - v1rg1n1ty, bu11ying, s3xuality, and more are discussed head-on.
🐙 I want more! I’d love an epilogue where we see our characters days, months, and/or years down the road!

Thank you so much to Jessica Warman and Entangled Publishing, and Entangled Teen for the ARC of this book!

I had high hopes for Repeat After Me by Jessica Warman, but unfortunately, it fell short in several areas. The premise of reliving the same day over and over again had potential, but the execution left much to be desired.

Emma receives a mysterious call before her senior class trip, warning her not to go and using her family’s code word, “Gizmo.” Despite her curiosity, she proceeds with the trip to a remote island, where she and her friends get stuck in a confusing and repetitive time loop.

I usually enjoy stories about time, but this one left me wishing I hadn’t read it. The idea of a time loop where each iteration is an alternate dimension of the same day was interesting, but the execution was confusing and hard to follow.

One aspect I did enjoy was the slow development of the relationship between Louis and Emma. Their stubborn refusal to acknowledge their feelings was endearing, and their dynamic was one of the few highlights.

However, the rest of the book was a letdown. The humor was crass and vulgar, failing to make me laugh and instead leaving me feeling uncomfortable. The characters were largely unlikable, with the possible exception of Louis, and their supposed growth felt forced and unconvincing. The story was filled with gross-out moments that detracted from any potential enjoyment.

The ending was
particularly frustrating. I don’t mind open endings, but this one provided no answers or closure. The mechanics of the time loop were never explained, leaving me with more questions than answers.

Overall, while the book had some interesting ideas, the execution was messy and unsatisfying. Ultimately, it just didn’t work for me.

Lots of characters that are all very annoying.

Review for Repeat After Me

4.75 stars

As I have stated in other reviews before I love a book that explodes a theme. This book explores the theme of “what would happen in a world, where nothing matters… Or does everything matter?”
Dudes and dudettes my non-binary pals read this book immediately. if you want a funny, dark story. if you want a nonlinear plot. If you’re here for just vibes. If you want multiple point of views, if you want a time loop type of story. A little romance. If you want all what I just listed above this is the story for you. This is so cute and so fun. I’m taking a .25 away because two of the characters that I wanted to end up together did not. That is literally my only complaint. Also, what a mother effing ending. I love a book that makes me wonder what the heck did I just read?

What did I learn?  “Nothing matters… Or does everything matter?” It’s for us to decide.
Here are the quotes I loved

“Pretty is temporary. Beautiful lasts a lifetime.”

“Everything is changing; everything is ending. I'm terrified.”

“By harnessing the forces of darkness" I waved a hand across his face. "You will remember none of this tomorrow?"

“People love the expression "the only certainties in life are death and taxes." That's kind of splitting hairs, isn't it? If you zoom out on the sentiment, the message is still the same: the only certainty in life is suffering.
If somebody asks, "Is this going to hurt?" the answer is always, always yes.”

“Time is an inscrutable kaleidoscope.”

"When you realize the person you want to be with — when you really know-nothing else matters. Like they say, love is blind. It makes fools of all of us." She shrugged. "Sometimes you just have to lean in with your whole self and do whatever it takes. Because you know in your heart the other person is worth fighting for."

“The adventure is just beginning."
