Not one of the more memorable Cadfael books. Neither the new characters nor the plot were particularly remarkable, and the mystery was a little lacking. There were still some delightful moments- Abbot Radulfus had some good moments, and I enjoyed Robert, Earl of Leicester. I also appreciated the meditations on the continuing civil war between Matilda and Stephen.

But not one of my favorite Cadfael books, and so I'm sort of sad that it's the penultimate book of the series.

One of the more mystical Cadfael mysteries, though the mystery is still largely solved through human action. I have some doubts about the logistics of the murder, as eventually explained, but generally it all holds together.
