I was going to give it two because I wasn't fond of the style of writing or any of the characters (the main guy, Kurt Wallander, is very...difficult). However, the plot was interesting and it wasn't totally unrealistic police work: lots of false leads and loose ends before things come together.

[b:Faceless Killers|935308|Faceless Killers (Kurt Wallander, #1)|Henning Mankell|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1327652719s/935308.jpg|2885250] introduces Swedish detective Kurt Wallander. A brutal double murder drives the story and stymies Wallander who is met with roadblock after roadblock -- while his frustration is evident, his resolve is even more so. The story also touches on Swedish social issues, primarily those involving immigrants, and reveals Wallander's messy personal life, which makes him a three-dimensional character. The translation was exceptional and moved the plot along nicely. An excellent introduction to a series that will leave you eager to read more.

Faceless Killers begins with a compelling start that carries through the first half and beyond. However, the momentum seems to wane in the latter portion, with the final chapters hastily tying up loose ends. Despite this, the author skillfully portrays the weariness of the characters as the investigation progresses. Mankell adeptly sheds light on the latent fears harbored by individuals towards foreigners, as well as the ensuing physical and mental ramifications stemming from such apprehensions.
