Really 3.5... just couldn't give it a four. I think the sex is a little gratuitous, but the story is interesting and I'll definitely finish the trilogy.

I wanted to like this continuation of the Stars of Fortune trilogy, but I really struggled with Annika as a lead character. The language confusion was so upsetting to me…she acts like they speak to each as merpeople but she’s never had to apologize to anyone in her life??? She’s an innocent yet has had sex as a mermaid? I was also disappointed that this book continued the trend of giving the characters absolutely no life outside of the quest. What is life like as a mermaid? What did her sisters think of her being chosen for the quest over them? How did her parents feel about it? We got no insight into any of it.

I’m still invested in the story so I’ll finish it off, but I just can’t help wishing for a little more.

I just could not finish this book. Too much violence, too much evil I tried putting it down and reading something more lighthearted and certainly less violent. Then after a couple of days, I picked back up where I had left off  bit after reading for a while, I once again was bothered by the absolute violence in some characters.

I want to read for enjoyment, and even though I did make it through the first book, I cannot continue to read this one.
