My BFF recommended this to me. I will hold this abomination against them for eternity.

I liked the protagonist a lot. A strong female character without portraying fool-hardly stubbornness as “strong”. The FMC is a “pathfinder” aka a navigator in this world, and aside from dealing with workplace hazards such as unearned condensation from the misogynistic town elders to being attacked by a horde of horse lording people, she faces it all with a pretty level-head. In fact, the reason why the MC loves her in the first place is because of her intelligence and ability to outwit almost everyone including himself. I appreciated that a lot since most
”strong”  FMCs are written with the assumption that “loud” = “strong.”

I have very mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I enjoyed the first half, and ended up finishing the entire book within a day. But, I did find other parts a bit problematic. Fallon decides that he wants Shea to be his Tolroi (lover) and will stop at nothing to do so. Although I don’t mind the premise when the heroine is strong and wilful, I just found that in this case he was too manipulative for me. He constantly kidnaps her against her will and is extremely manipulative. He finally gives her the option to leave, saying that she can either stay (with other friends she has come to care for and trusts) but has to be his lover, or leave, knowing that the home she had betrayed her and she has nowhere else to go. Not much of an choice; especially when he said he would continue to try to capture her if she did leave. Although I liked the storyline and Shea herself, i just felt very uncomfortable that she fell in love with this man after how he treated her.

3.5 I really loved the world building and the characters with the exception of Fallon. I couldn’t get into the romance cuz I don’t see the appeal of Fallon at all... BUT I adored her friendship with eamon and buck. And will definitely read the next book

3 stars for the plot. 0 stars for the romance.

I honestly don’t know what happened. This book was thoroughly enjoyable until the romance. I thought I must have skipped a few chapters when the mmc fell in love approximately 2 blinks after the fmc’s identity was revealed. It quickly went downhill from there. I thought maybe he was trying to lure her in for a trap but if so, it must be in a later book and I won’t be around to see it. I felt no connection to either mc. The characters I enjoyed must have dropped off the planet the way they just disappeared.

I found a cool Reddit thread about fantasy romance, and this book got recommend. I'm so glad I found it!

Shea is a Pathfinder, one who guides villagers through the mists of the Highlands. On one trip, she saves her travelers from a hanging and also rescues some other men, one of whom wishes her to be his. She climbs a cliff face and escapes (rad).

Later, her town of sucky people betray her to a Lowland town. A tribe called the Trateri comes to collect them, and lo and behold, the hot dude who wanted her before is the leader of the Trateri. She escapes her bindings and becomes a scout in his army, fighting against the monstrous creatures. This part was my favorite! I loved badass Shea, solving problems and protecting her people. Oncce we got to the 'accept your place as the leader's wife' part, I had more problems.

Still, well-written and a tremendously fun read with lots of worldbuilding and cool monsters!
