This was pretty good. I enjoyed it. I was interested most of the way through. It got a bit slow at times, and at others, there were too many new names at once. Sometimes things felt like an afterthought, like the deal with
Fallen's brother being the bad guy. And when Paul came back, I had completely forgotten about him. He didnt seem to have been that important...

I enjoyed it, however, I don't think I'll continue reading the series. There was only one other named woman in the story,
and she is in with the bad guy
, there weren't any real friendships built since she constantly was looking for an escape, which just felt lonely and like she wasn't developing, despite her attachment... and here are some 'not like the other girls' vibes, too.

Honestly, this book started out really good. It had a great premise. The writing was decent, although it could've been more descriptive. The world itself was cool. Shea is a well written protagonist. However, around the 85% mark, I almost DNFed. The smut scene made me want to die. I was cringing so hard. Fallon (ml) is repulsive. He is not charming at all and acts more like a caveman. Also, as soon as he met Shea, he would keep repeating, "she's mine." Like ewwww, who says that she ain't your property, dude. That honestly should've been the first red flag. Anyway, I pushed through to the end, skimming the last bit. The ending was pretty underwealming, plus it had another awful smut scene *sob*. I definitely won't be reading the next book. It's a shame because the setup is so interesting, I really enjoyed it when Shea was on missions with her team. But her falling for a shitty dude just ruined it for me.

DNF⚔️

The first 3/4ths of this book were honestly so well written, I loved the story and the fight Shea put up. Once she reunites and is exposed as who is she to Fallon… I feel like everything is so forced. Fallon is not very likable. I understand that the author is trying to make him a morally gray character and he has to be given the fact that he is a conquerer,, but holy crap does the romance feel so forced. I hated the scenes following her drug-induction into the camp. It just didn’t make sense to me. Fallon lost all appeal after that, since he didn’t give any sign of becoming a good person. I hate how possessive he is of Shea but without real cause.

This book had so much potential for a slow-burn but it honestly got ruined. DNF

The story started off promising, and I really liked Shea's competence (and the way that her flaws weren't ignored by other characters in the novel, they actually call her out on them).  I was hesitant about Fallon from the moment he decided to "keep" her.  It was weird and controlling in a very un-sexy way.  I held out hope though, and I was quickly distracted by the best part of the book: the adventure.

The
two successful escapes and subsequent charade as a boy were genuinely fun to read.  Especially since they actually show us how skilled Shea is.  Her team of scouts was fun to see her interact with and care for too.  However, the fun immediately evaporated after she's revealed to Fallon.  It just reminds the reader that he's just a giant asshole with no redeeming qualities.  Shea and Fallon  disagree on a fundamental level.  And honestly? They have zero chemistry and Fallon is a generic alpha-hole.  I realized at some point during the "pretending to be a boy" segment of the novel that I was actually rooting for her to never get caught by Fallon and to humiliate him by evading him.  Not a great thing for a "romance" subplot to evoke.  When I realized that, I knew that I wasn't going to have anymore fun with the book as Fallon took up more and more page time in Shea's story.

TLDR: Fun adventure for most of the book! But the author wrote an antagonist in the place of a love interest, which totally undermined everything else.

DNF, I loved how the main character was smart and capable from working hard rather than magic, but the romance was weird, forced, and unneeded.

This book started off very strong for me, as I enjoyed Shea's story and it ticked a lot of my favorite boxes...right up until Fallon started to play a bigger part and I realized what an asshole he was.

I didn't like him very much and I definitely didn't like the way he treated Shea. She also became a very different character the more we saw of him and I liked her less and less every time she acquiesced so easily to such treatment from both him and her so-called friends.
