I was surprised that I liked this book so much. It was expiring from the library so I started it and it took me a little to get into it. I think- think - it is a post-apocalypse story as it references the great cataclysm and ‘boomers’ aka guns. The heroine is a pathfinder- someone who navigates between small towns in the Highlands. It’s a guild job and she’s competent but not liked by her town and elders. Shea goes to rescue some clueless villagers from the lowlands and meets the hero, Fallon, warlord of another people who wants to conquer the lowlands and the highlands.
The romance is a weird pace between slow (as in months between interactions) and fast - instant love. But it’s enjoyable.
Shea is a weird mix too of experienced and secure in herself and seemingly reckless and youthful. It doesn’t quite read evenly to me, and it’s hard to get a sense of her consistently. She would be too perfect - beautiful but doesn’t think of her looks, competent and always saving people, escape artist... she actually kind of makes me think of Mulan- her escape trick and dressing up as a guy to be in an army. But she gets criticized a lot by the guys in the story as being bad about explaining herself and not a team player and reckless. Which maybe they wouldn’t think if she wasn’t pretending to be a young guy? I don’t know- like I said, it’s kind of uneven.
And her reasons for staying are confusing. Why doesn’t she just leave? If she had known she’d been been betrayed it would make sense, but she doesn’t. If she was in love with Fallon it makes sense, but she isn’t. If she was young and lonely or looking for a place it would make sense but supposedly she’s been a guild member and passed all these trials and stuff so that doesn’t work either.
Like I said, uneven. Her history is referenced but not filled in.
But I still liked it a lot! Ready for book 2!

Review:
Why I didn't give it four stars was for two main reasons.
Reason one, even though it's a really badass thing to do, I don't really like the tropes where the female protagonist has to dress up as a boy.
Like I said, it's a really badass thing to do and the people with the strength and bravery to even think about going to those extremes are people to be admired, but I don't really like when people pretend to be someone their not.
Reason two, I really resented the fact that the male protagonist was really alpha maley throughout this book and how he has this urge to conquer everything.
When he first meets the female protagonist, he's like MINE and by the end of the book, the h just submits to his demands and doesn't ask for a little more respect.
Other than all that nonsense,
I really loved the h's character.
She had to deal with old, whiny men that thought they knew best and she really didn't have the time, nor patience to deal with their bullshit.
She learned later on that trust needs to be earned if people are to listen to her and trust is earned by explaining why something she says is important because, in the past, she just makes a statement and expects people to follow it.
I love her character development and can't wait to see what happens in the second book.

I don’t remember the LOL moments from the first time I read this but it was just as enjoyable. Was wondering why I didn’t give it 5 stars. The few”very” few editing issues and the Tolroi bit, thought we were way past that but even in the final chapter, that’s what was offered.

Saw this recommendation on [a:Ilona Andrews|21748|Ilona Andrews|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1588103544p2/21748.jpg]’ website. I read it hoping I had a new author to binge read and pant over. With book one done, I’m now very hopeful. You know, how book 2 is always the one that usually decides whether the author-reader chemistry was not just by chance.
The heroine in this book really made the guy work for it, my God. I liked the chemistry, adventures, friendships gained......okay the whole storyline. Kate Daniels, Nevada Baylor, Mercy Thompson might enjoy this immensely. “Might” because people are weird and they have different tastes.
