I don't know why, but I like this more than Little Women. Maybe because I already knew and liked some of the characters? Part of it is probably because the kids in this book are so much younger that there's no boring 1800s dating tension.

Alcott does a brilliant job of creating believable boys with all their joys, faults, and adventures. Jo and Fritz guide these little men through life in the kindest, most loving way possible that puts all modern parenting techniques to shame. If parents had their patience, then we'd have a lot fewer problems in the world today. Their treatment of and the evolution of Nat and Dan was the highlight of the book for me. These two boys both came from different places and presented unique challenges, but were treated with a firm hand backed with love and compassion and found a home with the Bhaers. My only criticism of this book, if you can call it that, is that it is more a series of short stories than one continuous tale. Yes, the boys grow and change throughout the story, but each chapter was very episodic and complete by itself. I enjoyed them yes, but after one chapter, I found myself satisfied and didn't feel the need to jump right back into another one. Still a worthy novel that deserves to be called a classic.

While an enjoyable book, I don't recommend reading it without first reading the previous one's. There were several times I didn't feel like I knew what was going on. My eldest daughter enjoyed it very much, while the two younger were on and off with it, especially with such long chapters.
