Has stomach-turning scenes of gore and torture but is contrasted by humorous one-liners appropriately peppered into the narrative. Kaleb's section of the stort should have been introduced earlier, when the other main characters were being introduced, as having a set cast and set narrative suddenly interrupted by a new plot thread is jarring.

The magic is confusing, but as it's mostly nonexistent in the novel and the world itself, i can forgive it that.

Ford is unafraid to kill characters, resulting in the stakes actually meaning something to the overall resolution and plot and makes me root for the survivors even more.

A map of the land would be very useful but not necessary, as the novel takes a steady journey northwards.
