I liked it a bit more than Raven's story probably bc I have a soft spot for Gar. Solid comic! Looking forward to the rest of the storyline.

This sequel to Raven definitely holds up to the original. Kami Garcia has a heck of an ear for character voice and there's fun little easter eggs to find in the super expressive art just like last time. I'm intrigued where this is going and just wish these books came out faster than once per year. On the flip side, it doesn't do much to break any molds and there are some awkward moments that don't quite land. It's nothing groundbreaking, but I'm still enjoying the ride.

I’m not making a full review right now because of time, but the sheer ignorance of animal rights, humane and ethical treatment of animals, and animal behavior on display here is atrocious.

PETA has been caught time and time again *torturing* animals on video to frame others for it, and killing animals in horrible ways because “it’s better than them being owned as pets!” They’re one of the most obvious examples of an organization not believing in what they call themselves. the fact that anyone with internet access, television, or social media somehow didn’t find any of the KNOWN and DOCUMENTED atrocities peta has committed, and *preached* in the book to donate to peta via the smart and trustworthy bff…

Anyone who works with animals is usually screened *to avoid* letting in peta activists who have, *numerous* times, gained access to legitimately humane and ethical places in order to make their attention-getting stunts at the expense of torturing and killing the very animals peta claims to care about.

Moving to a different animal issue, releasing domesticated animals into the wild is considered abandonment for a reason. Releasing wild animals into an ecosystem they don’t belong in is a crime for a reason. Gar opening those cages means those rabbits and monkeys are either going to die because they don’t know how to fend for themselves, or wreak havoc on the animals already living in that ecosystem. Way to go, Gar! Next time you find animals being *unethically* used for research, report the university and go. Home.

Point 3. Not all animal testing or research is harmful. Much of it is necessary, sometimes for the species in question! Thanks to the laws currently in place in the US, institutions have predefined ethical standards they have to meet in order to keep animals for any purpose.

Sometimes that purpose isn’t even scientific research—it can honestly be as simple as veterinary students learning about daily animal husbandry. By caring for the animals. Which are usually adopted out by the end of the semester or academic year.

4. Kill shelters euthanize animals for a reason. I get *so* sad thinking about it, but the reason kill shelters exist is because THEY CANNOT SAY NO TO ANY ANIMAL.

There are far too many domesticated animals than there are people looking for pets. The stray cat epidemic is an enormous problem. It’s legally considered more ethical to painlessly euthanize animals than to let them be thrown in the river or left in a parking lot by whoever’s getting rid of them.

No-kill shelters are wonderful, but they turn away animals all the time because of lack of space. No-kill shelters are also usually private, whereas kill shelters are usually publicly funded. Ofc kill shelters have stricter rules to follow.

5. Gar’s behavior with animals is horrifying. If it weren’t for his powers, he’d have been mauled ten times over for overstepping an animal’s boundaries. At least he sort of got in trouble for this at one point, but it was addressed quickly and poorly.

6. Normal animal behavior, what’s that? This book sure doesn’t know. From the dogs to the monkeys to the coyotes and everything in between, very little of the behavior portrayed is remotely accurate.

The way this book skips around serious and complicated ethical issues while preaching about its self importance is disappointing. And that’s my problem with the writing itself—as soon as the animals showed up, the fun stopped and the preaching started.

Please, please do not let this book “educate” you.

I will read book 3 because I really liked Teen Titans: Raven, but if the preaching or blatant ignorance continues, I’ll probably quit the series 😭 I love the TT, don’t do this to them

Edit: yeah I think 2 stars sounds more fitting

Pretty stupid book. Odd, conflicting, message. I really liked the monkey thought he was very cute and the art was good but the rest was dumb

I've always loved Beast Boy. Loved this take on him and his story. Such gorgeous illustrations.
