Interesting premise and interesting enough to read but there were too many plot lines and character interactions with extra drama that didn’t need to be added to the book.

I’m also annoyed that there are three queer characters in the book that are specifically mentioned as queer and all three of them die. Why? But there’s plenty of heteronormative interactions and one “no homo!” part.

The plot twist ending was a huge meh for me.

Too many characters and subplots. Loved the ending though.

A highly exciting thriller that begins with parts from the perspectives of characters that appear to have no link whatsoever. As the book goes on, such links are established, between characters and mysteries. Linwood Barclay masterfully builds a case that makes readers lean towards suspecting one character, the final reveal a major twist. At the centre of it all is the mayor, Richard Headley... I really enjoyed this read, the only thing that I thought lowered the quality in general were the small flashback chapters; I felt they could’ve applied to several characters, and while this was in itself a tactic to mislead readers they lacked the fast pace suspense of the rest of the book.

There were far too many characters and back stories which didn’t really need to exist. The book was too slow paced as well and the elevator incidents didn’t really seem to be at the heart of the story either. I wish Bourque’s character was further developed as he seemed to have potential. ⭐️⭐️1/2 stars.

What the heck? If I didn't seen Linwood Barclay's name on the cover of this book, I would never guess he wrote this one. I really enjoy Barclay's books, especially the standalone suspense books. I did not feel any of his regular intense suspense and great storytelling. I felt like this one dragged on for a bit and it just didn't keep my interest as usual. I did finish the novel, and it was an okay mystery...so I am not sure if I am recommending this one or not, lol. If you have any phobias about elevators or falling, I would probably skip this one. If you have not read Barclay before, start with this one, and the rest will only seem better.

***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***

This book is okay and an interesting enough read - but it's not vintage Barclay by a long way. It almost felt like a 'painting by numbers' style of writing, as if the author was tired and just going through the motions. There were a few cliches in the plot and the characters could have been much more developed than they were. I hope he's back on form for the next book.
