This short book packs a punch and I can understand all the praise it received.

It’s a stream of conciousness narrative by a young black, clever and highly educated woman who has successfully progressed in the privileged and conservative world of City finance.

The narrative paints a vivid picture of the constant ‘otherness’ people of colour feel in Western society, the overt and subtle prejudices and exclusions. Added to this is the crippling class divisions and accepted sexism.

Overall it’s a fascinating, enlightening and thought-provoking read from a character I didn’t fully get to know but felt I fully sympathised throughout.

But what it takes to get there isn't what you need once you've arrived. A difficult realization, an a harder actualization.

While this short story gave a lot of important points to think about regarding colonialism, classism, and more, I personally did not find myself to be the target audience. The writing style at times was difficult for me to follow. I enjoyed the overall concept, I think would have prefered it to have been written differently.

"We took the District Line back to Putney."

"... in a leafy West London suburb."

"... and bought handmade earrings on Etsy."

"... unseasonably warm for September. We drank beer... [...] near Blackfriars Station."

"Canary Wharf gleamed and ached, beautiful behind him."
