The best worst book I’ve ever devoured. CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS. That is absolutely NOT a joke. It is trauma city but written quite beautifully.

This book was soo intense. It was definitely thrilling in the way that a True Crime Doc sucks you in. I was compelled to read on to see wtf was going on.

Beyond that… this book really felt like the strangest wish fulfillment. Like, I didn’t relate to any of the characters nor did I understand where they were coming from. There’s a truckload of trauma in this book and maybe that’s what was guiding the decision making? If you don’t like dark, dark, pretty taboo romance, I’d say steer clear of this one. There are tone of incest and rape and torture, not to mention isolation, starvation, etc. The opposite of the maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

I really enjoy Godwin’s writing. Sea of Ruin was pretty high up there for me. This book? Not so much. For whatever reason I kept expecting something magical or otherworldly to happen , based on the tone of the book, I think. No, only the evil of like… human nature here.

it’s fucked up how high of a rating I’m giving this considering the content. But Godwin knows how to write a fucking novel. And she knows how to shock her readers and write the fuck out of a taboo. didn’t see that plot twist with Denver and how far his cruelty goes. For some reason I am refusing to believe
that Wolf is dead god fucking dammit please I need him to be alive
and I’m already ready for the next.

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

I went into this book blind, and it didn't seem to be what I thought it was going to be so I decided to check some of the reviews.... Yeah, after reading some spoilers I decided it wasn't for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve been a fan of Godwin ever since I picked up her ‘Trails of Sin’ series and as someone who devours both romance and thrillers (Thank you ASD brain), she’s always my go-to when I want a read that’s gritty, honest and raw.

‘Hills of Shiver and Shadows’ is a page turner that will leave you with the best book hangover. Despite its length I never once became bored or felt like the story needed to progress quicker. Godwins writing is flawless; her descriptions of the Artic are almost ethereal at times. Juxtapose this with the almost bestial nature of some of the characters and their actions and what she creates is nothing short of spectacular.

I desperately don’t want to spoil anything of this book and I know if I discuss the plot, the characters, my favourite parts I will. So, my advice; read it blind…Have no expectations, no preconceived notions of what you think this book is about. You’ll get the best surprises and the most genuine response to it. You’ll fall in love with so many characters and you’ll be desperately awaiting the second instalment as I am now! This is definitely one of my best reads this year and I know I’ll be coming back to it again.

NOTE: There are a lot of trigger warnings for this book so please read them before you start.
