This was tremendous. Although I predicted many of the mysteries before they were revealed, it took nothing away from the bitersweetness of the story. The prose was almost lyrical—very beautifully written. I think this usurps Broken Country as my favorite read of the year so far!

Wow, after waiting forever to get this book from my library I actually completely forgot what it was about so I dove in without even reading a synopsis. WOW I'm glad I did!
This was part what I expected, and a LOT what I didn't. There were truly memorable characters, relatable and flawed, making this book compelling from the first. Then the plot gets going and I actually had NO IDEA where it was going to go, which honestly doesn't happen a lot. You can sometimes guess, but this time I do not think that you will. And along the way the writing draws you into the time period and the atmosphere of fear and edginess permeating a nation at war being bombed nightly.
Definitely a page-turner, definitely memorable, and definitely one that had me thinking long after I finished.
Recommended for fans of twisty stories, unearthing shocking family secrets, WW2 historical fiction, and being surprised.

There’s a good story in here somewhere but it’s over-worked, over wrought and goes on and on and on...edit out at least 200 pages of waffling and phrases like ‘in her heart of hearts’....(in her heart is surely explanatory enough and she only has one) and this would have been a much better read. I almost gave up on it but was interested enough in the plot and there are moments of really good writing; but they get lost in the waffle. Her other books are much better written than this. This reads like chic-lit rather than mystery.

I read this book twice and it was still engaging the second time. I feel like this is one of Kate Morton’s better novels. The characters are very rounded and the story is paced very well. It definitely kept me intrigued throughout the whole book. Almost every single chapter had to do with the overall reveal at the end. The ending was shocking even the second time around and she wrote it in such a way that you would never guess the ending. I love this book and have recommended it many times to many friends.

Surprising. Intriguing. Mind twister.
I listened to the talking book and found that the narrator was wonderful - Caroline Lee.
I found the story very enjoyable even though I had figured everything out fairly early. Morton has a way of describing characters and their everyday actions with a compelling turn of phrase and oh so relatable.
