There were parts that I liked and others that I was 'so uhm, what now'
The plot and the pace were all over the place, sometimes quirky and light while turning extremely heavy and dark the next minute, let me tell you I had whiplash!
For a character driven book we get too many POV switches in the same paragraph, sometimes you had to reread a sentence to get who uttered that.
There is a lot just hinted at but we needed a more solid plot for this book, even if the author planned to have a sequel, they should have at least tidied up some questions left unanswered, this one felt more like a 300 pages of messy preview.
Niko is a good captain and a nice character, she deserved a better story than this useless moping and pining after a toxic ex.
Hope they'll do both her and her ragtag crew justice in the next instalment.

This is a lot like A Long Away to a Small Angry Planet, which I enjoyed. But there was something lacking that I couldn’t put my finger on. I wanted more action in the restaurant, and more action later on when there are pirates involved. I love detail but I felt like the detail was misplaced. I thought she did a great job with the world building and the characters were fascinating and dynamic. It seemed that it could have a sequel by the way it ended, so I might pick it up to see what happens.
Minor: Kidnapping

This was a really fun read! The GBBO comparison is a litttle bit weak - while cooking is featured throughout, the competitive nature of it is only in the VERY beginning. Regardless. the crew and ship interactions are really fun! The plot pacing is a little oddball - it doesn’t have the same sort of arc that I expect from this kind of book. It almost felt like it was at odds with what kind of book it wanted to be - examination of relationships/identity or high stakes adventure-y - it does both, and it works ok but feels a teeny bit herky-jerky at times. That said, unpredictability is not a bad thing and I enjoyed the ride regardless!
Moderate: Torture, Murder, and Kidnapping
Minor: Grief
