This is a lightweight space opera but not a successful one. The jumble of tropes and cliches is too silly to make for a moving or thoughtful book, and there are way too many chapters devoted to torture and genocide for the book to work as fluff. What's more, the premise depends heavily on its central character being a superb strategist and leader, and she didn't convince me as either.

Fun and fast. The prose is a little unpolished in spots (once the word "sparse" shows up three times on the same page), but the plot is solid and the characters are great.

Really enjoyed this read! Loved this found family and the world it’s set in. Very excited for the sequel!

Sometimes you just want to opera your space and this book delivers. It felt...not entirely coherent but I didn't really care while reading it because the momentum just takes you along and that was exactly what I needed.

There's the start of two really good books in here but they cancelled each other out. It's a fun ride but ultimately unsatisfying because there are too many things going on with too many characters that don't get the chance to be fleshed out properly. Perhaps in the later books in this series the needed pause will happen but at this point it felt like watching two pilot episodes for two separate, vaguely related shows.

I'll probably check out the next book regardless.
