Volume 14 of the series starts with an introduction to the new big bad, otherwise known as Mister Dark. It's a great little story told from his point of view but with the art showing the story of how his opponents The Boxers managed to trap him.

The bulk of the story is entitled Witches and deals with the aftermath of the destruction of Fabletown. Bufkin the flying monkey is trapped in the remains of the Woodland office with Baba Yaga and a host of other nasties and no way out. Frau Totenkinder (the original witch from Hansel and Gretel) goes on a quest to defeat Mr Dark, leaving her position as leader open for Ozma of Oz to take over. Geppetto returns and tries to take over the Farm. And Beauty has a surprise for the Beast...

The remainder of the book is filled with a story of baseball, sudden death, a trial and a new relationship, all set in the kingdom of Ambrose.

All in all a good set of stories and a clear return to form.

I very much enjoyed this one! I need more of the witches and magic! So interesting and fun to read!

I was glad to get back to the main Fables story after that appalling Jack/Literals crossover mess. There's a little bit of interesting history on the Dark Man at the start, some fun stuff with Totenkinder and then the Witches arc abruptly ends on a very odd note and we have a 2 issue story set in Haven. Which is quite sweet, but nothing special. The single best thing in this book is the Bufkin plot. Overall, it's a little all over the place though. Certainly not Fables at its worst, but no where near its best either.

Bufkin is the best.

Honestly, there was a lot in this one, and it was all fairly interesting (and let's face it, I love me some crazy-comic-urban-fantasy-with-talking-animals), but Bufkin just stole the show. Okay? Okay.

Like I said, Bufkin is the best.

Yay, Fables is back to form after the mediocre "Great Fables Crossover".

April 2024: This volume is a lot of set up for a confrontation with Mister Dark, and I really enjoyed Bufkin and friends in the Business Office handling the escaped d'jinn and Baba Yaga.
