I saw this being described as a fanfiction of Full Metal Alchemist, and while absolutely true in plot and tropes and even most world-building.... you know what makes fanfiction so good? The fact that I care about said world, and even more importantly, about the characters already.

This book did not convince me to care enough about its content, and I'm feeling generous in saying it is a 2.5 thanks all to its writing style. It felt very trope-y but without any substance, so I have not enjoyed this half as much as I hoped I would.

Oh how I loved this!! I haven’t rode for a couple the way I was riding for Wes and Margaret in a LONG time. They are both such rich characters I found myself relating to in different ways, and their mutual pining was everything. Saft writes romance so well! This has very similar vibes to “Divine Rivals,” especially in the historical fantasy sense (though I never really felt 100% sure what the time period was here?). However, I would have liked to see more of the hunt. SO much of the book is leading up to the hunt, and then it felt like it was over in a snap! Overall the events right before and after the hunt felt rushed, too, but I still loved this book as a whole. A new romantic fantasy favorite!

I truly enjoyed this book. It definitely was more focused on the character relationships and who they were rather than the hunt. It was a romance with the hunt sprinkled in as the backdrop. I enjoyed the themes of the book and how people’s actions and prejudices can impact those they are used against.

I loved this book: I thought the world was really unique and well fleshed out, the characters drew me in, and it was a fun, adventurous read.

Overall I had a good time with this novel, even though it became evident that so much of this is lifted directly from Fullmetal Alchemist - whether entirely intentional or not. This story ended up being much more character-focused than I anticipated; the hala hunt is a side plot, it seems, to the larger plot of getting Wes and Margaret together and facing their insecurities, fears, and grief.
