I devoured this, thanks to a long car journey and not being able to find anything I want to watch on tv.

This book had me guessing someone else who did it constantly. It was the perfect mixture between thriller, romance and a little bit of chick-lit.

I should start by saying that thriller is not my preferred genre, but I do enjoy them every now and then. However this book had no redeeming qualities for me.

The main character Sophie is a mid thirties woman with a loving, handsome husband and a son. After she suggests they move their family from Chicago to rural Texas, her husband happily finds a new job there so she can live out her dream of being a crunchy stay at home mom blogger. Despite being given everything she wants, she grows bored with her life for some reason. Then she randomly becomes obsessed with local socialite Margot after seeing one tagged photo of her on Facebook. Sophie manages to find a way into Margot's inner circle of rich, late 30s "friends" whom have a secret shooting club. In addition to shooting skeet, they also drink excessively, and cheat on their husbands just because. Margot is also known to sleep with high school boys, including her best friend's son 🤮 I think the worst part about this gross storyline is that all the women just turn a blind eye and don't seem to have an issue with it. Even after Sophie learns about Margot sleeping with teenagers, she just brushes it aside and continues to follow her stupid infatuation. They make a point to say several times that the boys are 18 and the age of consent is 17 in Texas, as if that excuses it?? The whole thing gave me the ick. Sophie is such a vapid character who is so desperate for attention and validation from these terrible women that she's willing to risk destroying her perfect family for it, for literally no reason other than boredom. Don't get me wrong, I love a morally grey/unreliable main characters, but Sophie was just plain stupid (she was drugged by them multiple times but continued to hang out with them anyway🤔) and never really wises up or redeems herself. The murder mystery of it all wasn't even exciting or shocking. The writing was also bland and repetitive (be prepared to read about Sophie drinking lattes, working in the garden, and cooking food A LOT). I'm genuinely mad I spent money on this book 😑

So I think people are lowkey giving this book a bad rep but I completely understand why. The behaviors of these women who are supposed to be between their mid to late 30's is deplorable. Way too much alcohol consumption to be believable, grooming 18 year old boys to engage in underage sex, gross entitlement, backstabbing, and just disgusting behavior with a lack of respect for themselves and everyone else.  How Sophie made the choices she did (stupid ones mind you) will never cease to amaze. The climax doesn't actually happen until about 55/60% of the book. I also didn't like how Sophie trying to get a grip of her sexuality wasn't a focus point. Although, I will say the plot twist that happens during the last 90% of the novel was the only plot point that made me give this three stars. Also the epilogue is realistic enough that I actually agreed with.

I am continuing to work through my never ending BOTM TBR....

I had high hopes for this book, even though I read questionable reviews. I really wanted to enjoy it but it feel pretty flat for me.

All the characters in this book were awful people. It made them all so unlikable, which is turn had me disliking all of them. All of the women especially in this book are horrible humans. They cheated on their husbands, sexually assaulted children (including their own friend's son), had obsessive/stalker tendencies, and thought themselves above the law. It was gross. For me, I have a hard time enjoying a book when I have such strong dislike for all the characters in it.

The twist at the end was unexpected. I felt like I figured out "who did it" right before it was announced. That is my reason for giving this three stars and not lower. I wouldn't recommend this one. If you have been thinking about reading it, skip it. It is not worth the time, in my opinion.

Do you have hours to waste reading about a mom who wants to be a stay at home mom, moves her family, just to become obsessed with Facebook and a socialite who is obsessed with herself? Do you want to read about intricate details of the socialite's nipples, extremely descriptive food making? How about just reading about a group of grown women who act like teenagers, go out and get plastered, cheat on their husbands, and have sex with each other's teenagers? No? Me either.

That's why I DNF this awful book at 50% through. I wanted to DNF at 30%, but kept holding out that okay, the "thriller" twist will be coming soon. Nope. Almost 50% through, all I've listened to is grown ass women abandoning their families to get drunk, drive around drunk, shoot guns at things for 5 minutes, cheat on their husbands, and flaunt off in front of and seduce teenagers who happen to also be their friends children.

There is ZERO plot or character development and I hate every single character in this book. Why did we have to deeply describe eye colors and lattes and alcohol and give so much detail to little stupid stuff and not give any to the characters? Can I also add, why would the author choose some of the language the characters use? I don't think an adult who's engaging in this type of behavior would actually use words like "Yummy!!". I typically don't DNF. But this one, I just can't waste any more time with. I can't even describe accurately how much I dislike this book. I don't even care what happened because I can probably imagine it wasn't anything to make it worth my while to finish.

Do yourselves a favor and just skip this one. 🥴
