I fell completely behind on Donna Grant's Dark Kings series, so decided to start over from the beginning. I opted for the audiobook this go-around but I'm not loving the narration. I do enjoy the characters though. Returning to these early books really highlights the improvements in the author's writing. There were a few plot holes in this one, but they didn't detract from my enjoyment of this part of the story.

This series is a comfort for me but honestly, I couldn’t remember much of this book passed who the characters were.

Listening to them this time around shows how slow these kind of are. The storyline is pretty similar to book 1 because the whole point is Deirdre getting all the warriors and druids she can.

Speaking of that hoe… her sexual assault of Quinn will never sit well with me.

Ordinarily I find Insta-love a little annoying but this time is was used in a clever way. It helped to illustrate the fact that it is easier start a relationship than it is to maintain one. Especially when the couple involved just won't talk to each other.

On that note tension over the 'secret' a little artificial. She can't tell anyone her secret because she made an oath, but they all know about the secret, but they won't tell her they know about the secret because they are waiting for HER to tell them. Just talk to each other people! Besides, her oath not to tell anyone about the secret was a little foolish. What if she was killed? She's an immortal warrior but she could still be beheaded. Then she would die and no one would know, it would be lost forever.

Once it got to the point where everyone knew the secret and everyone knew they knew about it, the book got much better.

On a whim I checked this book out on the Libby app --> my expectations were incredibly low  but I actually enjoyed the novel! Obviously, there was the cliche romance (I mean look at the cover) but not as much bodice ripping/smut as I thought there was going to be.  I really enjoyed the fantasy elements in the novel and the fact that the female lead/love interest had a personality.  She was feisty, intelligent and had a backbone.  An enjoyable read that didn't require a lot of brain power.
