Dinging half a star because I don't like the end.

Hefty but unlike most long novels it didn't sag in the middle and no part felt like it could have been taken out.

Wow. Just… wow. This book floored me. It is an insanely good read. Finished it in a hammock in France, at surf camp. Sam, our surf guide, strummed on the guitar as I dangled in the hammock. This book is special. Barbara Kingsolver knows how to write an incredible masterpiece. The focus on “institutional poverty” isn’t really pedantic… but it does include a scathing reflection on the backwards, mean-spirited attitude people have towards country folk.

Wow… I loved it, a LOT. I would read this again immediately. It’s fucking hard at times, but it’s beautiful with regularity, like sunset and sunrise. The experience of reading this leads me to believe we’re capable of much more than we let ourselves believe, which is a fascinating takeaway from a tale like this.

I could recommend this to everyone, but I’m sure it’d punch just a little too hard for some audiences. I enjoy a good punch here and there, and I sit in this hammock now with tears wetting my eyes from joy at the book and its tale, but also sadness at the hellish journey, and sadness that it’s now over. Onto the next read… but I will NEVER forget the story of Demon Copperhead.

Be aware before you start this book that is an emotional roller coaster. I will never forget this story and I understand why it is a top award winner.

Demon Copperhead is significant literature in educating and understanding generations of WV, VA, TN, and KY “mountain folk” and how small towns are set up to fail.

I didn’t know how Barbara would wrap it up at the end.. I was worried throughout the book about this

Holy hell is this book tense. I didn't relax until literally the last hour of it. It just felt like the shit kept coming for Demon.

I can't recommend this book, unless you're looking for something that is challenging and heart wrenching.
