It's 2017. My grandmother's in the hospital and I am faced with endless depression that hangs heavy over my head like a hangman's noose. I don't quite remember what happened during that year because everything passed by in a hazy, tear-filled blur. I was alone most of the time in university, eating and sleeping on my own, walking through cold hallways with my head down because I did not want to attract too much attention.

I found this book series around the same time I found Valente's Fairyland and isn't it odd how our brains will fixate on certain things or obsessions to avoid breaking down? Besides using Brooklyn 99 as a comfort tv series, I distinctly remember and associate this dark time of my life with this book series. I read the first book, devoured the (tragically short) YouTube series and movies. I was hooked and couldn't stop until I found the rest of the books because I really cared about the characters. The premise was interesting, original and fun. I could quote these books from memory and I read countless fanfics of the characters. I wanted to know everything about the lore and the character design because they were really stylish, unique and gorgeous. And then before I knew it, the storm had passed. My grandmother healed and the dark clouds above my head dissipated.

The books pulled me through those times. Their brightly colored covers and fun characters stayed with me long after the sickness has passed. In Ever After High, you don't have to be someone you're not. You can chart your own path and defy stereotypes. Just thinking about Raven's journey to refuse her dark legacy and be true to herself....I mean, come on, if this were the premise of a YA novel, won't it be a bestseller? People tend to overlook children's books but I realized now that these were really sort of special now that I looked back at them. There was so much detail and wordplay kids would have missed that went into crafting the myths. I find something new and some clever reference every time I open it. Plus, it's lovely that the book is so rich with heavy text, footnotes and cute drawings that I highly recommend reading the paperback versions instead of on a Kindle.

All books are excellent but to be really honest, the best one out of all the 4 books has to be Book 1 and Book 3, simply because of the 4th wall breaking, the funny commentary and memorable characters.

I won't really recommend getting Book 2 and 4 because Book 2 was quite lacklustre in my opinion. Book 4 is just a compilation of short stories with some repeated stories from the first three books. Unless you're a super fan who wants to know what happened to the characters, I think you're going to be pretty pleased with just Books 1-3.

Oh, and if you're thinking of getting the Monster High crossover book, just don't. That one was not great.
