my god this was garbage, I have never before finished the last page of a book and then put it directly into the recycling bin

I came into this book with lowered expectation, as Susan Wright's previous foray into the Star Trek extended universe with Violations is... bad. Wright completely failed to capture the nature of the Voyager crew, as they were portrayed on the show, but maybe that was because at the time of publication, Voyager was still in its first season. Regardless, that was a hard DNF for me when I tried reading it last year.

Dark Passions is... better? At least I finished it. The Mirror Universe is a fun playground to frolic in, when used correctly. I'm not sure it was here. Why was Enabran Tain the same character in the Mirror Universe as in the "normal" universe, completely ignoring the internal logic of the MU concept? Who knows. The writing is superficial, and feels very juvenile at times. It's kind of sad to see Wright's writing didn't mature between 1995 (Violations) and Dark Passions (2001). The sprinkling of sapphic-ness is nice. I wish there had been some of it in the show(s).

I don't think I'll be reading the second book. The cover for part 2 promises Janeway in a neglige, which would normally be enough to entice me, but I doubt even that can salvage this story.

This is just gratuitous, but still fun.
