This book, League of Dragons, was satisfying. However, it did not feel like the end of the series. Yes, the war comes to a conclusion, but the ending did leave much to be desired. I wouldn't call it a disappointment. It just felt short. As if this was not a planned ending but an opening for more adventures. I would even go as far as to speculate that scenes were cut to keep this book at a similar length to the others.

On the series as a whole, I would say it was truly something special. I thoroughly enjoyed every book but one (#8). The bond between Lawrence and the dragon Temeraire was a joy to read. I'd highly recommend the audiobooks. Simon Vance does an incredible job with the dragon voices. Quite humorous. If you're a fan of dragon fantasy, this series is a must-read. I'm not claiming it's perfect, but I would call it exceptional.

Well, I mean, cool?

A better review to come when I can think it up, I guess.

And so we come to a most satisfying End. I hope we do get more Temeraire stories in the future, but for now I find myself content.

Also Ning is a conniving delight.

What an excellent end to the series!
One of the problems with Napoleon really was that he went about undoing unjust laws everywhere he conquered (though shamefully restored le code noir in his own colonies for fear of revolt). I love that Novik dealt with this issue and laid bare the concern that "good guys" weren't really good and kept the reader questioning if maybe Napoleon should win after all. That the solution was to liberate the dragons and grant them rights was so satisfying. And the political intrigue and battles in this one were all so well written and played out. The twists, particularly at the end, were exciting and welcomed and it left the world in an interesting position with the reader welcome to imagine so much more.
I think that this, along with the first, are easily my favorite of the series and if there were a few books that didn't excite me, I'm glad that I read through the whole thing as I did to get to this point.

This one gets a marginally better rating because there were several touching moments, which delivered on tensions that have been simmering for the whole series. And I got very emotional about
the two of them sighting the actual ship Temeraire
for reasons I'm not entirely sure of.

Overall I think this series lost its way after book #5 -- if I had the power to edit it, I'd cut out probably four books' worth of material, mostly from books #6-8, and expand on some of the best moments from books #1-5. It's frustrating because I know how talented Naomi Novik is as an author. Her worldbuilding is incredible and interesting, and her characters are wonderful and so, so compelling. But her pacing and presentation of those elements is not fantastic in the latter half of the series.

Considering all that, I prefer her standalone novels, though I will probably return to re-read favorite parts of this series in the future.

I was provided with a free electronic copy of this title from the publisher and Edelweiss.

Aw, sad to say goodbye to this series. I highly recommend the audio versions narrated by Simon Vance. As a series closer, this was satisfying.
